Southwest Florida is quickly approaching one of the biggest fundraisers in the fight against breast cancer.

Most people think of breast cancer as a woman’s disease., but men are affected too. It’s motivated men all over our area to join the Real Men Wear Pink movement.

P.E Coach Aaron Waldoat at Tortuga Preserve Elementary wears pink.

“My wife’s grandmother had breast cancer, and my wife’s aunt had breast cancer. My wife’s mother tested positive for the gene that causes breast cancer,” Waldoat said.

In science class, Andrew Coffman has a similar story.

“My wife had a very close friend of hers diagnosed with breast cancer, stage four, she lost that battle two years later,” Coffman said.

And down the hall in music class, Justin Mayer is also shaking things up for a good cause.

“Well, as a child, I had leukemia, so I’ve had some personal experience with cancer. So I’m always happy to help out and support the American Cancer Society,” Mayer said.

All three, along with two other teachers are part of the Real Men Wear Pink campaign and raising money to teach breast cancer a lesson.

Coffman: “If I can do more to help then I believe we should. To be a good role model for my own students and for my children and if that means me wearing pink and getting the word out then that’s what I’m going to do.”

Mayer: “I had some fellow teachers and some friends who unfortunately had to battle this disease and they fought it and are doing so far so good. I’m happy to help and support.”

Waldoat: “Anything we can do to make a difference in the community and be a light.”

That light will shine on the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at North Collier Regional Park.

The money raised supports patients and funds research for a cure.

“I challenge any male teacher out there, sign up with Real Men Wear Pink, form a group, start fundraising and get the word out,” Mayer said.

Men at WINK News are joining that effort to raise awareness for the people we love who are fighting this horrible disease.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at North Collier Regional Park is this Sunday, October 23 at 9 a.m.
