Marines Ban Facebook, Myspace

By WINK News

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Marine Corps is banning its troops from
going onto Facebook, MySpace and other social network sites, citing
a possible security risk.

The corps issued an order Monday saying the ban is effective
immediately on the Marine Corps computer network. It said the
Internet has been used as a haven for malicious behavior, and said
that using social sites can expose information to adversaries.

The Associated Press has learned that the move is part of a
larger Pentagon review. Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn last
week ordered a review of both the threats and benefits of using
social networking - and asked it be done by the end of the month.

The order doesn't effect Marines' private use of such networks
on personal computers outside of their jobs.

I agree with the Marine restriction on the use of "FACEBOOK' as a way for our service personnel to communicate with their family and friends. There are enough facilities available to our service people to stay in touch with the home bunch. I am a retired Army Command Sergeant Major (CSM) with thirty years of service behind me and have seen and personally experienced actions that were detrimental to an on-going mission. By the way, Marines are Marines, not Soldiers.

I use Facebook and communicate with family serving in the US Army. As a veteran myself I can appreciate Facebook for what it offers to soldiers serving our country who rely on Facebook to keep in touch with their mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, daughters and sons. I can also understand that the Marines are wanting to protect the safety of our soldiers. How can we fix this to protect those living to protect us and still keep them close to the ones they love most?
