MAGGIE MONDAY: Baking treats for our "Greatest Dogs"

By Maggie Crane, WINK News

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - For many of us, our dogs are like part of our families, and you may have seen the premier of the search for the Greatest American Dog here on WINK Thursday night, people who would do just about anything for their pets.

In honor of the new show, Maggie Crane found one local dog-owner who spends hours everyday cooking for her dogs and others.

If they haven't already taken center stage in your house, we have the perfect recipe that puts your pooch on a pedestal.

With the search for the Greatest American Dog now underway on CBS, Darlene Sumner has found recipes for delectable doggie delights that make her dogs dance.

Every morning Darlene and her dogs come to Little Paws Bakery to cook up K9 confections at the rate of more than 1,000 a day.

"It really is worth it," Sumner says. "They love you unconditionally no matter what, you come home from a rotten day of work or whatever it may be that's going on in your life and they just come over with a great big kiss, and you know, the day's much better right there."

Darlene is teaching us how to make peanut butter biscuits. And, believe it or not, they're good for people too.

"It is not sweet, there is no sugar in anything, everything is all natural, organic ingredients," Sumner says.

The recipe starts with the basics; flour, oatmeal, baking powder, milk and of course, peanut butter. Darlene then adds a little molasses and chicken stock. Now that's where it stops sounding quite so people-friendly, but dogs happen to love it.

Darlene mixes the mixture to a soft, blended consistency and takes it to the table to turn it into treats.

'Every single one is cut by hand," Sumner says.

The treats take an entire day to dry into a dog biscuit. They must bake for about 20 minutes in a convection oven, then bake on low for 24 hours.

"It makes them real crunchy," Sumner says.

Darlene has been baking dog biscuits for her family of 16 for the past five years. That's right, she has 16 dogs!

"I rescued probably half of them," Sumner says. "People will come into the boutique and go I just can't keep them, and I go OK and I end up with them."

She sells the rest of what her dogs can't eat to four-legged customers.

"Chicken-liver bones are our number one seller," Sumner says.

It has dogs wagging tails for these tasty treats.

"If you're going to give them a treat, give them a good treat," Sumner advises.

It's been human tested and puppy-approved -- leaving these furry friends panting and pawing for more.
