MAGGIE MONDAY: Graphic designer

By Maggie Crane, WINK News

It's Monday and time for another "Maggie Monday," and as you know, we like to take you places and show you things you typically don't get to see. Today, Maggie didn't have to go very far to find an interesting job to profile.

She found WINK News graphic designer Andrew Windish for a special project.

"Today we're going to make your open for your segment," Windish says.

An "open" in news speak is designed to let you -- our viewers -- know what's immediately coming up.

"I like using the different tools to get the message across as clearly as possible," Windish says.

And hopefully, it gets your attention.

"The open will only be up for a few seconds, so we want the best stuff at the beginning so it gets the most attention out of it," Windish says.

The open begins in the WINK News graphics department -- a tiny room with cool tools and two people to keep content moving.

"Everything you see on the air has been through this room at some point," Windish says. "I look at graphics as a way to tell the story."

Windish finds inspiration on and off the job.

"I might see something like an ad for you know, lunch meat on sale or something, and 'oh that's a nice design on that' and 'how can I integrate that into our graphics format without the ham sitting there?'" Windish says.

"This is the tablet I use to design, and like a pen, I use this as a mouse, but if you're in Photo Shop or something, you can draw with it," Windish explains.

Andrew uses it to create new material. It's harder than it looks!

Andrew starts by sifting through video clips of stories you've already seen on Maggie Mondays to find some of the best footage.

"Like action shots, so when people see your open they say 'oh I really want to watch that!" Windish says.

We leave Andrew to work and come back a day later to put on the finishing touches. Before he says OK to the final product, Andrew adds music and sound effects to the open.

You'll soon see the open right before each Maggie Monday airs.

So, now you know! The next time you see a graphic, you'll know the people behind the designs.

Most people do go to school to become a graphic designer, but Andrew just picked it up and taught himself.
