MAGGIE MONDAY: Power play

By Maggie Crane, WINK News

Tiger Woods, Tom Brady, Alex Rodriguez and Annika Sorenstam are all athletes at the top of their game.

And now-- athletes are starting younger and younger, hoping to jump start their careers.

On this "Maggie Monday," we're taking you down to Velocity Sports Performance in Naples where coaches start training kids at 8 years old. If that sounds young, it is, but Velocity likes it that way. The gym strives to break bad habits before they start, while giving youngsters a leg up on their competition.

"And go! Punch hard, punch hard! Time!"

"This focuses on making you better," Brittany Reid, Velocity athlete, says.

"My speed has gone up a lot, and I think I'm more conditioned," Kyle Huff, Velocity athlete, says.

Two teens striving to skip to the top of their game turn to Velocity Sports Performance for speed, strength and explosive new power.

"We believe in the power of free motion and your body is that free motion," Derek Touchette, Velocity sports trainer, says.

No treadmills here -- just tackling body basics that change bad habits.

"I used to run kicking my butt, and I thought that was o.k. but it's not," Reid says.

"We study the way the body moves and make sure the foot is in the best position," Touchette says. "It also helps cut down on injuries."

Touchette believes athletes are made, not born. He says Gulf Coast High School junior Kyle Huff is proof.

"He came in a decent speed -- might not be most gifted but he's hardest working, and that what sets him apart," Touchette says.

Since training at Velocity, Kyle has shaved four seconds off his 40 meter dash.

"It feels good-- it feels like all the work I've been doing paid off," Huff says.

Both on and off the field.

"This helps him to stay focused," Betty Huff, Kyle's mom, says. "He's able to handle anything, and it makes him a better person all the way around."

Brittany Reid's mom agrees.

"I've seen a huge change in her self confidence and the way she handles herself playing sports," Beth Reid says.

These parents say Velocity training is a power play for the future.

"Kyle has always talked about going to college and playing sports in college, and we wanted to give him the tools to make that happen," Betty Huff says.

"We train these kids to see them get off the bench and into the game, into the game to become a starter, then go from a starter to higher level of play," Touchette says.

"This gives her a leg up in the competition as well as gets her head in the game," Beth Reid says.

"It's good for making you stronger," Brittany Reid says of drills Touchette makes her do. "It helps you out in basketball because you have to pass a lot, and you need that kind of arm strength."

Velocity athletes train like a pro -- oftentimes next to a pro.

"I have 75 guys that play in the NFL and a local product that pitches for the Atlanta Braves," Touchette says. "They work out right here along with the kids"

"It just makes you feel good, like 'wow, they're doing it and shoot, I'm going to be that good someday!'" Reid says.

But Brittany knows it takes constant conditioning with tough coaches.

"Ehh they're all right," she jokes. "They're good -- they push you because they know how good you can be," Reid says.

They even put me through the paces of a Velocity work out. Tough love -- from coaches who don't care whether their athletes win or lose.

"We're here to teach kids how to be the best athlete they can be," Touchette says.

"At the end when I walk out, I feel amazing, like a top athlete," Reid says.

Velocity is holding two summer camps for kids ages 8 to 14 to get in shape. The first four-day camp begins June 23rd. It costs about $150. For more information, call 239.649.FAST (3278) or log on to Velocity's website www.velocitysp.com/naples.
