You've probably noticed by now that WINK Traffic Now Reporter Miriam Zamorano has been gone for a few days. Our Maggie Crane has been filling in and now brings us another behind the scene look at someone's job. This time it's Miriam's job!
A big congratulations goes out to Miriam! She's now a married woman! In her absence, she left Maggie to fill in. Take a rare look behind the scenes of what she does on a daily basis.
"Good morning everyone! We're finding build up in Collier County..."
It's a familiar sound on the WINK morning newscasts and radio broadcasts. You all know Miriam Zamorano as the woman who gets you to work while avoiding traffic tie-ups. But this week, she's not here.
"Well, I kind of have to go away for this thing... this little minor thing -- just my wedding!" Miriam says with a laugh.
The lucky guy? He's our chief photographer Brad Dotson, who Miriam says couldn't believe she was taking on traffic and technology together.
"My fiance says those are the two things I do not get, and now that's what my whole job is based around," Miriam says.
Now, the tables have turned.
"Brad grew up here and he knows everything, and I think he was nervous about me taking this job, but I've been studying maps and I think he's kind of impressed!" Miriam says. "Now I'm giving him directions and saying 'well you want to go west here, and you want to go north here, and I can get you through here,' and he's kind of like 'wait! we're getting reversed here.' So one of the good things is we never have to stop for directions," Miriam says.
Miriam starts her day making maps to mark out snarls in your daily commute.
"The system we use is called Beat the Traffic," Miriam says. "You can put it 3D mode, so what's cool about it is that it shows the area, but you can look as if you're the driver and you actually have that driver perspective."
"My whole goal is to run around like a crazy person and make these phone calls, check websites, listen to scanners, call everybody, know your neighborhood, know your community, know what's going on out there and make you start off your day well," Miriam says.
She's cool and calm by the time she hits the studio, but behind the scenes it's often a frantic rush to get viewers and WINK FM listeners the latest information before they head out the door.
"We record in this studio -- it has to be done in five minutes of each t.v. appearance because it has to be accurate and up to date," Miriam explains. "I have one minute to get this on before I have to be back on t.v., so I'm a little out of breath because I just ran, so let me catch my breath and hopefully get it on in one shot."
She does and has just 30 seconds to get to the studio.
Miriam almost has to memorize the maps she's made because they virtually disappear on the green screen behind her so the computer system can circulate each map. She uses monitors on either side of her to tell where she's pointing.
"I'm Miriam Zamorano with WINK Traffic Now," she signs off.
Miriam and Brad were married on Saturday and will return from their honeymoon on Thursday. You can see Miriam weekdays on WINK News Now This Morning from 5 a.m. To 7 a.m. and from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on WINK News This Morning on CW6. She's back on WINK in the evenings from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to make sure you get home o.k.
