Naples - On TV.. on billboards.. on paper. Ads for a new medical procedure are popping-up around Southwest Florida. It's called Absolute Lipo Dissolve. The ads say it'll get rid of excess fat, without surgery, diet, or exercise. So--is it too good to be true? WINK News decided to check it out.
Medical Director of Absolute Lipo Dissolve, Dr. Luciano Boemi, explained the technique: "It's a micro-injection technique that uses a compound that is already present in the body and those compounds are called the PC and DC."
The cocktail is injected with a series of needles into the body where it supposedly dissolves fat cells.
"I find it very effective for the face, for the women around the breasts, for areas where traditional liposuction is not a great idea like the inner thigh." Explained Dr. Boemi.
But others.. like Naples plastic surgeon Dr. Andrea Basile, aren't sold on it. "Just like any new technique, new technology, until its matured, until the kinks are ironed out, until we know in whom it doesn't work and in whom it's unsafe. I'm not going to be the one to be using it." Said Basile.
But Dr. Boemi said the risk is minimal. "The first time PC and DC were injected for the purpose of fat dissolving it was in Italy in the 80s, and we are not aware of any long-term side effects of this technique."
Both doctors do agree, it's not a complete alternative to liposuction.
Absolute Lipo Dissolve won't work for large areas of fat. It's more for body contouring.
"It is yet another technique and procedure that allows us to treat another set of patients." Said Dr. Boemi.
Some experts say you do need to be somewhat careful after the treatment: avoid heat, saunas and sun bathing for about one week after therapy.
DR. Basile urges caution: "The point is chemicals injected into the body have been used for a long time." He said. "I look forward to the day when we can know if it is safe, I'm just not going to ask my patients to help me decide that."
Each session starts at $650 or more, and you'll likely need at least three sessions over a period of several months.
You usually do see the first results within a month.
