Vaccines: What your kids need this flu season

By Jennifer Stacy

(FT. MYERS, Fla) A lot of parents are scratching their heads about the latest recommendations for vaccine against seasonal flu and H1N1, or the swine flu. So, just how many shots do your kids need, and when should they get them? Jennifer Stacy went straight to the health department to get what you need to know to keep your kids safe and healthy.

This flu season is unlike any we've seen before. Swine flu and the seasonal flu are both causing a lot of fear.

"Not only do you have the possibility of coming down with regular flu, which we can get a 30-35% infection rate in our community, we also have swine flu." Explains Jennifer James-Mesloh, from the Lee County Health Department. "When you combine that, you have that much more infection within our community."

So how can you protect your family?

"We are recommending that everyone get the seasonal flu shot, and also get the swine flu shot." Explains Mesloh.

Here are the guidelines:

*If your child is between 6 months and 8 years old and has NEVER had a flu shot,
she will need 2 doses of the swine flu shot, and 2 doses of the flu shot.

**If your child is between 8 and 9 years old, she will need 2 swine flu shots, and one seasonal flu shot.

**If your child is 10 years or older, one dose of the swine flu shot is needed, and she'll also need one dose of the seasonal flu shot.

"If they get the shots, then they can get the seasonal flu shot and they can get the swine flu shot on the same day," Explains Mesloh. "But they can not get the flu mist, which is the nasal spray, with another flu mist."

The vaccinations in nasal spray form for both swine and seasonal flu contain some live virus, so they can not be used together.

Still have questions? Ask your doctor or medical provider..

"Get these shots. Protect you and your family." Urges Mesloh.

The CDC urges parents to get their kids the seasonal flu vaccine right away, and not wait for the swine flu vaccine to become available.

The swine flu vaccination is expected to arrive in Southwest Florida by mid-October, and it will be offered in the nasal spray form first.

You can get free vaccines for your kids for both seasonal and swine flu at area health departments.
