FORT MYERS, Fla. - Breast cancer is the second deadliest cancer in women, with 200,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Now, there's a new tool being offered here in Southwest Florida to help increase a woman's odds of survival. It's called HALO.
"The biggest benefits are much earlier detection of risk factors for breast cancer," explains Dr. Kevin Fleishman, F.A.C.O.G with Physicians' Primary Care "It could diagnose risk factors 6-7 years earlier."
Unlike a mammogram which detects lumps that have already been growing, for years in some cases, the HALO detects abnormal pre-cancerous cells, using nipple aspirate fluid from the breast.
"Much in the way pap smears can detect cervical cancer early, we've now developed this breast pap which is designed to pick up abnormal cells in their breast which can pick up pre cancer or risk factors for cancer early," explains Dr. Fleishman.
During the five minute test, cups are placed on the breasts, and the HALO initiates gentle suction and massage, similar to a breast pump. The sample is then sent to a lab for evaluation. Most patients feel only a little discomfort.
The device is approved by the FDA but is not yet covered by insurance in most cases. The total patient cost is $99 at Physicians' Primary Care In Fort Myers.
The HALO is not a substitute for mammograms or self-exams and should be in conjunction with those tests.
Physicians Primary Care is one of the first practices in Southwest Florida to offer the test.
