SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - The Biolage Go Green Campaign started with a push to recycle shampoo and conditioner bottles in Southwest Florida salons.
"The project did great, we collected over 4,000 bottles," says Michell Hawkins Owner of Steel Magnolias Salon.
The project ended with hair stylists trading in their scissors for machetes and going to work in the great outdoors.
"It's good, it's hard work, it's very satisfying," says Simone Bolotin with Biolage.
More than 85 people from local hair salons and the Biolage company nationwide helped rangers at Ding Darling get rid of invasive and exotic plants.
"I had no idea, I thought it would be some pretty plants, I'd be sitting around on my blackberry. But this is not what I bargained for but it's great."
What Simone Bolotin is doing is making way for native vegetation.
"It's so cool to really get your hands dirty and get in there and see the results of what you are doing. So that's probably the most satisfying part for me."
Park Ranger Toni Westland says, "Native plants provide food for the animals. There's no food source for the wildlife so they won't be here because there's no food."
"Once we get it out, plant more stuff we might see more animals here."
Something all species of Southwest Florida will be able to enjoy.
Along with the work at the refuge, Biolage donated $7,000 from the recycling effort. All of that money goes toward restoration at Ding Darling.
