One Southwest Florida school will be offering vouchers to its students after receiving an "F" grade from the Florida Department of Education.
This is the second year Immokalee High School earned an "F", and under state rules any school that earns a failing grade twice in four years, must offer its students vouchers. Pinecrest Elementary in Collier County also earned an "F", but students there are not eligible for vouchers. "F" schools face increased state scrutiny and are obligated to come up with plans to turn things around.
Charlotte County had the best grades in Southwest Florida. Out of 17 schools, 14 schools earned an "A" grade.
Lee County had some disappointments. Six Mile Charter Academy went from an "A" to a "D". But, overall 56 schools, 70 percent of the district's schools, earned either an "A" or "B" grade. Superintendent Dr. James Browder says that beats the state average. “I am extremely proud of our schools, teachers, principals, and administrators and very appreciative of their work and dedication to our students.”
The grades are based on FCAT results for reading, writing, math and science. This year science was added and the school grade criteria changed as well. In addition to the six components from last year, schools are also graded on performance in science and learning gains in math for the lowest 25 percent of students.
Bonus money is tied to the school grades. Any school that earns an "A" or increases their performance by one letter grade gets $100/student for their school.
