FGCU Plans Memorial Service for Retired Associate Professor

By WINK News

The family of Roy Mumme, retired associate professor in the College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University, invites the community to a memorial service in his honor on Sunday, June 28 at 11 a.m. in the Student Union ballroom on campus.
Mumme passed away June 18 at his home in Fort Myers. He retired in 2003 as associate professor in the College of Education after working 37 years for FGCU and the University of South Florida.
In the early 1970s, he was appointed director of the University of South Florida at Fort Myers to lead a regional campus that then consisted of a single trailer in a parking lot – and that 20 years later through his leadership became an integral part of the new FGCU.
He was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by FGCU in 2006 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the public good. He was recognized for his energetic and vigorous pursuit of access to higher education in Southwest Florida – and as a true Renaissance man who was called pioneer, professor of education, poet, sports enthusiast, artist and lover of metaphors.
Mumme’s wife, Suzie, is an Honorary Life Member of FGCU’s Town & Gown organization. She and the family will greet visitors at Sunday’s memorial service.
