ONLY ON WINK: FCAT tests thrown out

By Cristin Severance, WINK News

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A Cape Coral mother is mad that the most important test of the year in her daughter's class now won't count.

Karen Schwab's daughter Kayla was anxious but ready to take her Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

"I sent my daughter to bed early to get a good night's sleep, so she can have a clear mind and think and do what she's got to do to pass this exam," said Schwab.

The eighth grader's teacher made a mistake and read the test questions out loud in the reading portion of the FCAT. School District Officials tell WINK News under the FCAT rules teacher's can't do that.

The principal at Caloosa Middle School found out what happened, threw out the tests and called parents.

Schwab says her daughter is worried that a missing test score will hurt her next year.

"When she found out she was in complete and total tears. She knows this is going to high school with her," said Schwab.

The Lee County School District says this will not hurt the students. School officials will use course work and tests throughout the year instead of the FCAT's to place Kayla and her classmates in the right classes for next year.

The district is still reviewing if the teacher will be punished for the mistake.
