Free school supplies for hundreds

By Melissa Cabral, WINK News

ESTERO, Fla - School is just a few weeks away, and hundreds will be starting the year off right thanks to the generosity of the community.

It started as a challenge to members of Summit Church and Journey 239 in Estero to donate 30 dollars for a brand new backpack and school supplies for students.

The response was overwhelming, they were able to buy 750 backpacks for students.

500 were handed out during the "Back to School Bash" Saturday.

Summit Church Team Leader Orlando Cabrera says, "People who are hurting through right now what's going on in the real estate market and the job market and we felt that if we were ever going to do something today was the day to do it."

The remaining 250 backpacks will be donated to schools in Lee and Collier counties.
