Summer camp helps struggling students

By Melissa Cabral, WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A summer camp is underway in Fort Myers to help struggling students make the grade.

The faith based program, "Breaking Free God's Way" started three years ago and the idea is to help students break away from the labels and stereotypes and succeed in school.

The instructors are Lee County teachers helping students in Kindergarten through 5th grade get back on grade level.

They spend five weeks in the summer going over all the basics while still having fun.

Founder Michelle Musco says, "It's maintaining their skills bringing them back up to grade level it's showing them positive self reinforcement that you can do it."

The program has helped more than 200 students.

Musco tells us that last year, five failing students returned to school on grade level and two made the honor roll.

It wraps up after next week, and is made possible through private and community donations.
