3rd graders will soon learn if they're promoted to 4th grade

Summer reading camps ended for Lee County elementary school students on Tuesday. The 3rd graders who failed the FCAT took one more test to determine whether they'll be promoted to 4th grade.

Summer break is just beginning for 20 students at Tropic Isles Elementary School.

The 3rd graders failed the FCAT this spring and spent the last few weeks in summer reading camp, hoping to improve their academic skills.

Because the class sizes are small, teacher Margaret Graddy is able to give the students one-on-one attention. She also works hard to identify special needs and teach the students test taking strategies. Graddy says, "Hopefully we've prepared them enough with test taking skills and test taking strategies that they're not nervous, because they do better when they are relaxed."

Before leaving for summer break, the 3rd graders took another assessment test. The results will be forwarded to their principal and that's when the students will learn whether summer reading camp paid off and they will be promoted to 4th grade.

Graddy says, "These kids have worked really hard and I expect 100% success."
