Teachers union, education groups suing to block voucher vote

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The statewide teachers union and other education groups are set to sue the state to block voting on two school voucher proposals.

The state constitutional amendments, which are on the November ballot, are designed to expand and protect voucher programs that let students attend private schools at public expense.

Leaders of the union and organizations representing school boards, superintendents and administrators said they were filing the suit Friday in Tallahassee.

Americans United for Separate of Church and State also is participating in the suit. One amendment would repeal a ban on state funding of religious organizations.
