FORT MYERS, Fla. - WINK News has learned the Lee County School District must find a way to cut $14 million dollars before the end of the school year.
Monday, district and union leaders spent hours trying to make sure money doesn't come out of your child's classroom.
The district has not made a final decision yet. Several options are on the table including only giving employees a 2% raise instead of what they may have previously contracted. If they do that, no more employees will lose their jobs.
Another option is not giving out raises instead using the six million dollars to help cover rising health insurance costs.
One idea other school districts are considering to save money is to do a salary rollback, basically cutting employees salary anywhere from two to seven percent.
That may be considered here in Lee County but it's just one of many options.
Another meeting is scheduled May 15th.

Hmm, what a great idea it was to pass amendment 1. That whopping $250 avg. savings we all may get on property taxes is sure worth all the cutbacks and layoffs right?

It seems that whenever there are budget crunches, it is either the school or Social Security. I believe we have lower our standards on education and Florida students are suffering for it. My son was a great teacher and has a master degree in business, however he could not make ends meets on his salary so he quit. If you cut any more salaries what kind of teachers are we looking for in the future.
