Crist says he'll approve state university tuition increases

By The Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Governor Charlie Crist vetoed higher tuition for state universities and community colleges last year but says he'll approve 6 percent increases for each this year.

The increases are part of the $66 billion state budget that both legislative chambers will vote on tomorrow.

Crist has a line-item veto power on the budget and could delete the tuition increases but sign the overall budget.

The increase will cost university students about $140 more a year for the standard 30 credit hours. For community college students, it'll be about $92 more a year or $118 if they are pursing a bachelor's degree.

Florida's university tuition is the nation's lowest, but Crist last year vetoed a 5 percent increase.

Wow, Gas prices are increasing, the country is plunging into recession, they are cutting funding for schools, police, fire, ems. Hey here is a great idea lets increase the price of higher learning pushing it further out of reach for a normal person! How about repealing ammendemt 1 Crist and giving the funding back to the people who need it so universities dont need to increase prices, and people wont lose their jobs!
