Today's daytrip may have you humming a few Jimmy Buffett tunes before its all said and done. My photojournalist Dal Kalsi and I jumped on the Lady Chadwick boat and spent an hour or so crossing Pine Island Sound. Today's daytrip takes us to paradise so to speak. Today we're checking out Cabbage Key.
Captain John Salus on the Lady Chadwick says, "It's a whole different experience in one day." He offers up insight on the local area and what to expect on your stop. But even he knows, his stories aren't the most entertaining part of the boat ride.
"The most frequent question we get is 'Are we going to see any dolphins today?'" Salus explains. "They don't do a show at 2:00, 4:00, and 6:00. They do it when they want to."
But the dolphins do show up and swim along behind the boat. They get excited and start jumping, giving you the photo opportunity you want. Here's a tip: the best place to see them is in the back, on the lower level. That's where we tracked down Kelly Hughes and her husband Hunter taking pictures.
"Since we were right on the back, we could feel the splashes from them" Kelly tells us. Hunter said, "We were like 15 feet away from them. It was awesome."
As the dolphin show fades, another slice of paradise emerges: the island of Cabbage Key. As you dock, you'll spot a sign that reads "Shower with a Friend." This is your first sign that things here are a little different.
If you're not quite ready for lunch, look to the right and you'll the tallest thing on the island - the 60 foot water tower. Steps will take you all the way to the top where you can check out a panoramic view.
But enough about the aesthetic wonders of the island. The crowds come to Cabbage Key for something more (or less) - cheeseburgers! But these aren't just any cheeseburgers. Part of the lore of the island surrounds the Jimmy Buffett island classic, "Cheesburger in Paradise."
The restaurant owner's son Ken Wells grew up on the island and says, "Jimmy Buffett did used to come out here. Obviously we do have great cheeseburgers in a paradise location so it doesn't take much imagination to take 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' and associate it with us."
Wells downplays the island's connection to the Buffett classic, but that doesn't deter visitors one bit.
"It's not uncommon for us to sell over 600 cheeseburgers in a lunch," Wells says.
Another tradition at the restaurant creates the unusual "wallpaper" you find inside. As the story goes, fishermen came to the bar for a drink and before they left, they'd tape a dollar or two to the wall to save for later. This way, on their next visit, they'd already have money for a drink.
The idea caught on. Today, the bills total somewhere between 60 and 70-thousand dollars. But it's unlikely the total will ever get much higher. Bills fall from the walls and the ceiling daily.
Wells tells us, "The tape gets loosened up and they fall."
When that happens, the staff gathers up the bills, removes the tape, and then donates the money to charity. They actually give about $10,000 every year.
So, before you leave the island, be sure to leave your mark here at Cabbage Key. All you need to do is bring a dollar, they've tape and a marker to write your name. Then, pick out a spot on the wall, attach your dollar and make sure it sticks. The next time you come back you can show your friends that you've been here before. Of course, it is likely your dollar will end up on the floor sooner rather than later. But then it goes to charity. Don't worry, you'll definitely get more than a dollar's worth on this daytrip.
