Daytripping with Kyle Jordan: Sun Splash

By Kyle Jordan

Here in Southwest Florida we have plenty of heat and humidity and this daytrip takes advantage of both. My photojournalist Dal Kalsi made a stop at Sun Splash in Cape Coral where you'll find 3 new water slides to enjoy.

Sun Splash covers 12 acres with several slides, pools, and a relaxing, quarter mile tube ride.

Tony Marzullo with Sun Splash says, "We make every effort to accommodate all of the family."

Parents, if you are taking you're little ones, you don't have to worry. The kids have their own private area and their own private slides where the big kids aren't allowed.

This year the park is also trying to tap into the teenage crowd. Sun Splash added a new 53-foot tower with three speed slides. The fastest drops at 40-feet per second. That's a 30 mile per hour fall.

The kids we talked to said the new slides are exciting, but not too scary. These new slides may challenge your sense of adventure, but Marzullo tells us that sometimes, for some people fear does win out.

He says, "They tend to refer to it as the walk of shame when you get to the top, chicken out, and then have to walk back down. We do occasionally have that."

If you're looking to slow your heart rate down a bit, grab a tube, relax, and hope the clouds don't spoil your day. The staff at Sun Splash always has an eye on the radar. If lightning pops up within 17 miles away, they close the towers. If lightning gets within 10 miles, they clear the pools too.

But don't worry about weather ruining your daytrip. If you do get rained out, Sun Splash offers a rain check if you've been in the park less than four hours. That kicks in 45 minutes after pools are cleared. After 30 minutes, you can get a $2 discount coupon for your next visit. If an hour passes and the pools remain closed, the park will shut down for the rest of the day.
