Susan Jones has been a teacher in the public school system for ten years.
Currently, she's at Sunshine Elementary in Lehigh.
But her love of teaching doesn't stop when the dismissal bell rings. Back in April, she opened a low-cost tutoring center called Chrysalis, which she operated out of her garage. But she thought in order to be taken seriously, she needed a classroom.
She rented some space and is now relying on volunteer teachers, donations and grants to keep things running. "We charge a little tuition," she says. "And we just applied for a grant. If we don't get that, we might not make the next rent!"
The cost is 25 dollars for two one-hour sessions per week, and the kids are tutored in math and reading. Susan has kids on the waiting list but needs more teacher volunteers for the individual sessions. "We teach one-on-one," she says. "Sometimes all these kids need is a little one-on-one and they just soar!"
There are also some pre-school programs available and homework help too.
