FORT MYERS, Fla. - A stack of diapers and baby wipes half a football field high is headed to Texas.
The supplies, for victims of Hurricane Ike, were collected locally by WAY-FM radio and shipped via Convoy of Hope, a national organization which coordinates help for those in need.
The diaper drive only lasted three days but was enough to fill 20 shipping palettes, each stacked about seven feet high.
"It kind of went slow in the beginning," says WAY-FM's Cobi Knight. "As we got toward the end last night, they were rolling in five or six cars at a time, filled to the brim with diapers."
The supplies are scheduled to arrive in Texas by Saturday night or Sunday morning.
People dropping off diapers said they remember the need here after hurricane Charley. "I have kids and I know how you need diapers, so I wouldn't want to be in a situation where I wouldn't have them myself," said Gisele Cintron, who dropped off diapers and baby wipes.
"We know what it was like not to have power, not to have the things we need," says Knight. "So when this comes up, we want to give."
