The South Florida Water Management District, a district of water management which manages the water in south Florida, is setting up a project in Collier County to show how residents can conserve water and still have a green yard.
The SFWMD is setting up a resident's yard complete with micro-drip irrigation and efficient pop-up sprinklers.
"We felt by educating the public we could really make a difference," says Clarence Tears of the SFWMD, "and show them how easy it is to conserve water."
Plants will be placed in site-specific locations and will only be given the water they need to flourish.
It's estimated the demo yard will save about 75,000 gallons of water a year.
"Can you imagine if we saved 75,000 gallons of water on this one yard and we had ten percent of the yards in Collier County doing the same thing?" asks Charles Duray, also of the SFWMD, "we're talking billions of gallons."
