Just His Type

Fort Myers biz fixes typewriters

By Judd Cribbs

FORT MYERS, Fla. - You may not have seen one around recently, but Bernie Crews, owner of Metro Electronics, has typewriters all over the place. That's because he fixes them.

"You'd be surprised," says Bernie, "people still use them, especially in offices. Typewriters can do things computers can't, they can type on forms and envelopes."

"Some people will actually not want to replace the machine, they'd rather spend more money repairing it."

"I've been working on these since 1983," says Crews, who rarely sees a typewriter he can't fix.

He enjoys the machines as much for their form as their function.

"Some of these are works of art," he says, "and they're made very well. Anything mechanical is pretty solid. These things haven't been made in 35 to 40 years and they're still out there being pounded on today."

Crews says the average typewriter costs about $75 to fix. "People don't want to part with them, they want them in good condition," he says. "They baby their babies."
