Cape guys get down and dirty

Joe, Rick, Wally keep Cape clean

By Judd Cribbs

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - You may not know Joe, Rick, or Wally but you might be in quite a mess without them. They're the guys who keep the sewer system clean in Cape Coral.

When we met up with them, they were flushing out a main line on SE 46th Lane.

Here's how they do it: a hose is fitted with a special nozzle which shoots some water forward but more water backward. The high backward pressure propels the nozzle and hose forward like a rocket.

When the hose is as far as they want it to go (today that was about 350 feet), they begin pulling the hose backward. This flushes out all the debris in the area, which is sucked up by a large vacuum hose.

The debris-laden water is collected in a large tank, which is taken directly to a waste water treatment facility.

It's a dirty job but somebody's gotta do it!
