It's a Ducky Dog World

Dog adopts ducklings

By Judd Cribbs

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - Magnum is a one-year-old Doberman Pinscher who lives in North Fort Myers.

He is as lively and energetic as you would imagine. But he's also a new daddy... and a new mommy. To puppies? No. To three ducklings.

Magnum's owner, Laurie and Bob Rowley, found the abandoned ducks wandering in their side yard. They later took them in and say Magnum immediately took an interest in them.

"So I held them down near him," says Laurie. "I didn't know if he was going to take a bite out of them but he started licking them and I thought, hey, this is better than wanting to eat them."

Since then, a couple weeks ago, he's been nurturing them and grooming them. "Every night, little by little, we'd let him be with them and he's just showed an interest in nurturing them and seems to really enjoy it."

The Rowleys say the ducks groom Magnum and sit with him. When the ducklings are old enough, they are going to be relocated at a pond on a nearby farm. Tentative plans are for Magnum to visit.

But for now, he seems content to be part of the flock. "He's papa duck," says Laurie with a smile.

Judd--thank you for doing this wonderful story. Laurie & Bob definitely deserved your attention to their lovely (second) Doberman!! Such a great animal story for everyone.
