Tiny 80-year-old is on the move

By Judd Cribbs

When Dottie Van Keuren "retired" to Florida ten years ago, she immediately began looking for work.

"I like to stay busy," says the diminutive 80-year-old. "So I got a job waving to people on a casino boat."

When that business went out of business about three years ago, Dottie came on board at the Goodwill Store on Fort Myers Beach.

"I love it here," she says. "We look out for each other. It's like a family." Dottie works about 20 hours a week and spends her free time exercising and visiting with any family members who make the trek from Ohio.

She still lives there in the summer but enjoys her Florida connections too. "I enjoy people, talking to people," she says. "I walk around the floor here and straighten up... talk to the people on the floor. If they'll talk to me!"

Dottie says she claims to be 5-foot-1 but was measured by a colleague and found to be "not even five foot." She uses a clothes rack on the lowest setting to allow her to do her work. "This is about the lowest it will get," she says with a laugh.
