When I first met Jenny Truncale, she was 99. And she walked up to me at a local luncheon and proudly requested I do a story on her when she turned 100.
Her exact words were: "I'm 99. Come back next year and do a story on me when I turn 100!" And we did. Then we did a story on her when she turned 101. And now we're celebrating her 102nd birthday.
We met up with her in Fort Myers and asked her for some words of wisdom, which she was happy to share with us.
On how to behave:
"Be kind to people. Be respectable. That's what I am. That's what my mother and father taught us. But these kids nowadays. No no."
On getting regular exercise:
"I walk and I make sure I know where I'm walking so I see cracks in the sidewalk so I don't fall."
On eating:
"Eat the right food. My daughter is a pain with the right food. She reads the labels. Make sure you eat right."
On housework:
"I have my one day, Wednesday. Wednesday, I do all the dishes and dust and clean everything else. Takes me about two hours to go around and do all my work."
On her daughter trying to slow her down:
"She says, ma, slow down. I say Carrie, I gotta move, move."
On doing puzzles:
"It keeps your mind alert. When you can't do it, that means you're gone! Ha ha ha!"
