Unimaginable journey

Area man raising money with 150-mile run

By Judd Cribbs

Brad Howe of Fort Myers is getting ready for a footrace. But it's not a local 5k or even a marathon. It's a 150-mile trek over six days across the Sahara desert. How's that for a little jog?

Brad's doing this to help raise money for a friend whose son has a rare brain tumor. "Because it's so rare, the funding is virtually non-existent," says Brad. He's been training on sandy surfaces and even went to Death Valley a few weeks ago to hit the sand dunes there.

All of his supplies, except for water and a tent, have to be carried in a backpack which weighs in at 25 pounds.

Brad's been training for this event for a year and appears ready to go. And while his friend's son will reap the benefits, Brad says he'll benefit too.

"What I'm hoping to prove to myself is when you set a goal that's way out there, you look inside yourself and put your head down and you can do it."
