Romeo and Juliet staged for teens

New version updates but keeps Bard's script

By Judd Cribbs

The Florida Repertory Theatre in Fort Myers is staging an updated version of Romeo and Juliet, performed by the Classical Theatre of Harlem.

The play runs through Saturday (October 6th, 2007) but during the week Florida Rep has been letting local high school students in for free during morning shows to experience the classic play.

"Shakespeare really has to be seen, not read," says the Florida Rep's Rachel Burttram. "So it's a wonderful opportunity for (the students) to see it in a way that's relevant for them as opposed to men in tights."

The classic dialogue has been maintained but the action takes place in a modern setting.
