CALL FOR ACTION: No Water

By WINK News

CAPE CORAL, FLA--From the street, Cape Village Condos looks abandoned.

The grass is overgrown. The dumpster is missing. The pool a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

This place looks like another tombstone in Cape Coral's foreclosure cemetery.

"I did like living here," said Brandy Rutherford said describing the condo complex where she lives.

Most of the owners have foreclosed in the condo complex she calls home. It's where raising two boys... one with autism.

She's paying her rent--which includes water-- on time.

"It's just a shame because I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do on my end of the deal," said Rutherford.

The condo association disappeared...and maintenance stopped on the building.

Then, she woke up Monday with the water shut off.

"I couldn't believe it. I was like what am I going to do? I can't do laundry and I can't do dishes. I still have a little one on formula," said Rutherford.

Cape Utilities won't turn the water back on until a 14 hundred dollar outstanding bill is paid. Rutherford says her calls to her landlord go unanswered.

"I don't have the choice to move unfortunately. I live on a fixed income. There's no money to move," said Rutherford.

She's getting by with bottled water...and baby wipes.

"I just want answers as to what's going on and get my water turned back on," said Rutherford.

CALL FOR ACTION spoke with the landlord who said the management company is responsible for paying the water bill.

The management company says water bills are paid for by association fees...but with most of the units in foreclosure, they weren't paid.

So they canceled their contract to care for the property for non-payment.

In the meantime, the landlord says she will help Rutherford move her family to another condo.
