CALL FOR ACTION: False claim about job creation?

County claims stimulus project creates 123 jobs

By Lauren Sweeney

Lee County, FLA - A $3 million stimulus project to build bike paths, a biodeisel plant and install solar panels on government buildings has yet to create any new jobs in Southwest Florida.

The County's website for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act boasts that 123 jobs have been created as the result of the Energy Efficiency Block Grant.

But according to Paul Wingard, deputy director for Lee County's Department of Transportation, the only people who have started work are a few consultants who worked on the grant application.

"At this point in time, none of those jobs have been created because none of that money is flowing down to those local governments," said Wingard.

Wingard said their application has not actually been approved even though the project is listed on the county's ARRA website.

The Department of Energy said they are in the process of reviewing thousands of applications including Lee County's.

"We are reviewing their application and will be making their award as quickly as possible," said Christine Kielich from the DOE press office.

Kielich said that 705 states, cities and counties have been awarded block grant funds so far for a total of $791 million.

Both Collier and Sarasota counties are among the areas who've been awarded funds.
