FORT MYERS, Fla. - Job Seekers beware. A Scam artist could be targeting you! It happened to one WINK viewer, who says she's out $135 thanks to the scam.
"Right now, I'm a waitress at Ruby Tuesday's and its just... out of season we don't get that many customers," said Emelia Glover about why she decided to look for a second job.
She searched for a part time job and came across an ad for jobs with the Postal Service.
"They had a contact number at the bottom. So I called it and it sounded legit. I gave them my information and they told me that was the first interview and that I'd have to take an exam," said Glover.
They offered to sell her study materials for the test.
"The booklet would cost they said 100 dollars and 35 for shipping and handling," said Glover.
She decided to buy the study guide.
"I studied it for a couple months because I wanted to be sure I got the job. Just studied and studied and when I felt like I could take the test and pass I called and talked to the human resources {with the post office} and they told me that it was a scam," said Glover.
The Federal Trade Commission has received thousands of reports about this scam. They even have a warning on its website. The commission says job seekers should know federal agencies and the Post Office never charge application fees. They never guarantee an applicant will be hired. Most positions do not require a competitive exam, but if they do the hiring agencies offer free study materials for those tests.
"I started crying," said Glover about finding out she paid money and studied for nothing.
Emelia doesn't want anyone else to go through what she went through.
"Especially right now because it's so... It's just really hard to find a job right now. And they're just taking advantage of people who need help," said Glover.
