MIAMI, Fla. - When Southwest Florida is at risk of a hurricane, you'll see people rushing to put up shutters. Those who don't own shutters rush to put up plywood. Which one protects your home the best?
With the help of Florida International University's civil engineering department, we put shutters and plywood to the test.
We used a cannon to launch two by fours at the shutters.
The two by four travels at 35 miles an hour, hitting the shutter at a force simulating debris during a category five hurricane, where winds would reach more than 155 miles an hour.
We asked many shutter companies to participate in our test. Two shutter companies; Roltite and All Weather Hurricane shutters, agreed to bring and install three of the most popular types of shutters for our test.
The aluminum panel, the aluminum accordion, and roll down shutters (also made of aluminum). We also tested plywood. Watch the video below to see how they performed.
