Keeping water out of your gas tank

By Melissa Yeager, WINK News

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - Getting water in your gas tank will cause you big problems, and it's happened at least four times this year in our area.

But inspectors from the Department of Agriculture Petroleum Division are trying to make sure it doesn't happen to you.

Inspector Ron Cass checks gas stations around Southwest Florida to make sure water doesn't end up in your gas tank. He's checked tanks for over thirteen years, and says he seen water in nearly every tank. "Normally, all the time there's water due to condensation," Cass told CALL FOR ACTION.

He uses a measuring device which changes color with water. He tested one tank for us, "About half an inch right there," he read from the measuring device.

Anything over two inches could ruin a car, and if he finds more than two inches, he'll shut the pumps down.

He'll also pump gas, and again if he finds any water he'll shut down the pumps.

During the rainy season, he says he issues more citations. "The water table comes up high, like it is right now, you get a very high water table. Any top leak, the water's over the tank, any minute leaks there the water can get in" Cass told CALL FOR ACTION.

But he says he doesn't have to shut down pumps very often.

Even though every tank has a little water in it, if you think your gas station's gas is affecting your car you can complain to the Department of Agriculture.

Inspectors also check for octane to make sure if you pay for super unleaded you're getting super unleaded.

CALL FOR ACTION requested a list of citations issued this year in Lee, Collier and Charlotte Counties. They gave us this list:
