PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - A Punta Gorda family says they are worried about a potentially shocking situation right in their backyard. They say a fight between two utility companies left a major power line on the ground in their yard for more than two weeks.
Florida Power and Light tells us the line in the Havel's yard is perfectly safe, but the Havel's disagree. Especially after seeing it in their yard for two weeks.
Behind their pool, the electric line snakes through the backyard, down the side yard and into the broken electric box.
Kurt Havel explained, "Embarq came and hooked up their permanent line and the next day or two we started getting intermittent power almost like flashes so we called FPL they came out here they did this correction."
Electricians tape holds it in to Kurt and Shelly Havel's home and the line's blocked off by a single strand of caution tape. "I mean I think it speaks for itself. You know, it's just open lines hanging out. We just don't know we don't what could possibly happen," said Havel.
The Havels' waited 15 days and made dozens of phone calls trying to get it fixed.
Kurt told CALL FOR ACTION, "At that point, it became too much and that's why we ended up calling you guys."
We called Florida Power and Light to ask why it had been left this way so long. FPL sent us this email about the situation: "Underground service replacement involves the installation of a new underground conduit through the hovel's yard. FPL's temporary underground service installations utilize fully insulated cables that although on top of the ground are safe to people and pets in the yard. FPL completed the installation of a new underground conduit earlier this week and on Monday will complete installation of the new service at which time the temporary service will be removed. Thank you for bringing to my attention the Havel's concern and providing us the opportunity to communicate to you the resolution of this matter," Grover Widden, FPL Spokesman.
"I'm ecstatic and thankful," said Kurt Havel.
