The FDA has issued a new update in the salmonella outbreak, adding areas that have not been linked to the tainted tomatoes.
So what tomatoes can you eat?
"I think it's about making smart decisions," said shopper Maribeth Wood.
Being smart, means staying informed. But the FDA's ever-changing list of what's safe and what's not, has some consumers staying away completely.
Before you go shopping remember: cherry or grape tomatoes as well as tomatoes on the vine are always okay to eat, no matter where they are from.
The FDA says to stay away from roma or plum tomatoes and red round tomatoes, but there are exceptions.
"As long as you guys are giving us the right information, then we know what to look for and be careful," said Wood.
So we went to Publix. We found the store is selling all kinds of tomatoes but they are all grown in areas not linked to the salmonella outbreak. We bought roma and round tomatoes but they're safe because they're from Canada and Mexico. But right now roma and round tomatoes grown in Lee and Collier counties should not be consumed. Charlotte county is okay.
Bottom line, stores like Publix won't put tomatoes on the shelf...if they're not safe to eat.
