Ethanol gas mix worries drivers

By Melissa Yeager, WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - When you go to fill up, you might have noticed the sign by the pump saying they're blending ethanol with your gasoline. The State Energy Act lawmakers passed this spring requires all gasoline sold in Florida be 10% ethanol by 2010.

As soon as customers pay at the pump, the rising bill cues a chorus of complaints.

"I think they're ridiculous," said Paul Carlson.
"outrageous," said Kendell Lombard.
"They're horrendous. They're really high," said Jose Gonzalez.

Frustration hits a high note when they notice their four dollar gasoline is blended with ethanol.

Paul Carlson told WINK News "Since they put ethanol in my mileage seems to decrease and I don't like it."

Mechanic Bobby Sweesy has heard their complaints, and he agrees.

"I think it burns faster, I mean in my own opinion. You're getting spark plugs not lasting longer. I don't know. I don't see the good in it right now," Sweesy told WINK.

The one good thing for him is he has more customers coming in with questions about their cars.

"Most of the time with people using ethanol, the cars running rough," he said.

He says one thing you can do, is every once and a while, fill up with a higher grade fuel. You don't have to do it all the time, but if you notice your car running rough, it can help.

"Most of the time, switching to a higher grade of gas, name brand straightens it right out," Sweesy explained.

The higher grade will help flush out the build up of excess carbon in the lower grade, saving you money in the long run.

Sweesy told WINK ,"You spend a little bit but you're not in here spending 200 dollars getting your throttle cleaned."

The Florida Department of Agriculture told WINK NEWS they have heard from customers complaining about a slight reduction in gas mileage.

But a spokesman also said the jury is still out on ethanol. The Department has received studies from the racing industry showing better mileage when using 20% ethanol 10% more than is in the current gasoline/ethanol mix.

It took about 8 tanks of ethanol mix in my truck before I had no accelleration for the first few minutes of operation, no matter how far I pressed the gas pedal. Then it would "kick" in like normal and the performance was less, and rough, besides lower gas mileage. I figured that the ignition system was going bad at first, but the more I drove, the more I was convinced of fouled injectors. I used STP fuel treatment and after 3 days the roughness went away. Adult supervision is needed NOW!

I drive an older, low-mileage car which used to run great until local gas stations started putting "up to 10% ethanol" in the gas. Now it stalls daily and is very frustrating and dangerous for me. I would like a choice since I can't afford to replace the car yet. Is there a gas station in Jacksonville that doesn't sell blended gas?

Thanks Charlie Christ...what a scam! If Ethanol is supposed to lower the price, where's the savings?!?

It also proves to us as Americans that we need to do what we gotta do to survive this unconstitutional dictatorship. Americans stand up for yourselves and stop being fooled!!!! your MPG (miles per gallon) don't lie. Also the life of your engine is drastically shorter. get informed America, we must fight back. i now also need a mechanic because E10.

You know I thought it was my imagination!. I have been driving back and forth to VA every weekend, around 400 miles. When I drive from Columbia SC and fill up with ethanol free gasoline I get great gas mileage in F150 year 2000. When I fill up in Virginia with ethonal gas I just started noting that I get less mpg! It does make a difference. One could get hooked on ethonal free gas very quickly.

I have a 2008 toyota prius when using ethonol gas mix my mileage drops from 48 mpg down to 41 mpg as I have no choice in jacksonville FL. I,m watching my gas mileage on a steady decline. After three weeks now my gas mileage has dropped to a low of 38 mpg. This is very dissapointing and I would like some answers!!!

I never received notice that all of our gas stations in Naples Florida were going ETHANOL There;s a stamp on all the pumps.....Why weren't we NOTIFYEED? We had no advice from Coounty or State. That's unconstitutional. We cant' get regular gas? What are the effects on the octane levels?Should we continue to use the same percentage octane as our owners manuals advise? Thank you! Anyone know of gas stations/companies that do not add ethanol to thier fuel. I have tried to avoid it at all costs, but now the stations I used to go to have ethanol blends. Ethanol is not a good answer to the fuel crisis in anyway, my mileage plummets when I have to fill up with ethonol gas. Not to mention the ethical implications of having starving people in the world while we are being forced to burn food in our cars. Ridiculous!!!

You have been scammed by the Greens that convince Congress to sign on this Scam. You want something to think about, try this, Google ENERGY NON-CRISIS"by Lindsay williams, then see if you can think for your self, instead of a bunch of Al Gores Cap & Trade Scammers!!

Come on politicians in Florida, quit trying to ram this inferior product down our throats, err throttle bodies. With less fuel mileage and dirtier engines, our state gets a net result of more pollution and greater energy consumption. This is the exact opposite result and is not the solution to our energy woes.

I have not found a gas station in ft myers that sells gasoline without ethanol. please anyone help me in this matter...my car is burning fuel and also just had the fuel injectors cleaned at a whopping 250.00..because of ethanol..

When I moved to Florida and had to put the ethanol mix in my Toyota Prius, the mileage fell from 58mpg to about 49mpg at the same, steady 61mph highway driving. The jury isn't out on reduced mileage; a study in race cars pushed to their limits isn't representative of street use.

I cannot find a gas station in Englewood, FL without ethanol. I have always filled my car with premium without problem, that is until ethanol was added. Last week I filled my 2004 car and it started running rough until it mixed with the gas in my tank. I haven't filled up my tank yet so I do not know this week's MPG, but I could not believe how quickly my fuel indicator moved. I intend to keep my car for some time and am concerned with damage and buildup in my engine. Should I be concerned?

I just converted my 2007 Honda CR-V to a Flex Fuel Car and running my car on E85 I actually get better gas mileage than with E10. In fact the car runs much better using the Ethanol vs. Gasoline. So far I am averaging 24 MPG in the city on E85 vs. 22 MPG on 10% Ethanol.

Finally someone who knows whats going on. Methanol and Ethanol are not the answer. We need to move more towards the hybrid technology. Yes you still need fuel but a far less amount.

Thursday, May 29 at 6:27 PM James Huffer wrote ...

Ethanol produces 18% less milage than straight gasoline. The study using 20% also used 13.5:1 compression engines and they are far more efficient that what you drive. Ethanol and methanol do not naturally have the volitility of refined oil products and cannot produce the work per volume used. The cost per horsepower produced is therefore 18% greater for distance traveled. We used methanol at Indy to reduce the danger of fire and that alone should tell you something about the product.
