Lehigh hydrants need repairs

By WINK News

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - On 8th and Roosevelt, firefighters fought a fire that started while the homeowner was away Tuesday morning.

"Gentleman was out walking his dog and while he was out walking his dog somebody saw the roof ends of his house in flames," says Lehigh Fire Department Spokesman Patrick Comer.

The hydrants near the home worked just fine, but we found other places needing repairs. One at 3rd and Gerald is right next to Maureen Maxson's home. "I really hadn't paid attention to it," Maxson told us. It looks like no one else had either. The faucet was dripping just a few drops, but down below the rust shows this has gone on a long time.

When we pointed it out to Maureen, she told us "They should fix it then so if there is a fire we wont' have to worry about our house burning up."

Florida Government Utility Association told WINK News the hydrant needs custom parts which take 6 to 8 weeks to get in. They also told us they have four other hydrants needing repairs.

On Leonard street, FGUA has ordered parts for another leaking hydrant.

It has also ordered parts and is replacing 3 rusting hydrants in the willow lakes subdivision.

The Fire Marshall has inspected these hydrants and declared them operational.

FGUA says it's being proactive, because ignoring this maintenance could make them inoperable later.

Neighbors like Maureen Maxson will be watching to see the repairs are done. "There's been fire's close by and kind of worries you," says Maxson.

Even though two hydrants are leaking, FGUA says since they work, they don't want to take them off-line. That's so if there is a fire does happen in those neighborhoods, firefighters still have quick access to water.

Maintenance workers hope to have parts in in the next few days to make repairs.
