Smart Bags

By WINK News

When a hurricane hits, companies like Storm Smart are flooded with calls for help. While you may know them as a company that makes shutters, check out what they're doing with the leftover material.

"I would look out into the warehouse all the time and see all of these scraps that were just going into the dumpster everyday," said Brian Rist with Storm Smart.

Rist wanted to make the most of their scraps, then it dawned on him during a trip to the supermarket. "When I go to the grocery store I have all of those plastic bags. It's a real pain to carry them all,"said Rist.

So Rist quit paying to haul the scraps to the landfill and now seamstresses when they're not customizing shutters are making green bags, just like the ones you'll find in the grocery store.

"I absolutely feel better about not filling up my dumpster with material that's going to go to the landfill," says Rist. "The material does not disintegrate well. So it's going to be in the landfill for our children's children's lives."

The company is doing what it can to make good use of storm resistant material and they hope you do too.
