The entire community is invited to celebrate the best of performing arts students from throughout Southwest Florida at the 12th Annual Young Artists Awards Gala on Monday, March 16th at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, hosted by Lois Thome of WINK-TV. Tickets to the event are only $45, including a silent auction beginning at 5:30 PM, dinner at 6:00 PM, and the show, starting at 7 PM. In addition to enjoying the performances judged by the professionals in attendance that evening, the program will also feature the ‘Audience Choice’ award, where tickets holders in attendance are invited to vote on their favorite performer at the event. Cash scholarships totaling $25,000 and other prizes will be awarded to the students the night of the gala.
The not for profit Young Artists Awards program continues to expand in its twelfth year of operation. On four separate auditions days during two weekends in January, seven panels of 60 professionals and educators in the performing arts adjudicated registered auditions in dance, drama, instrumental music, classical voice and contemporary voice/musical theatre. This year included many new judges who expressed a desire to volunteer their time and expertise in all the performing arts categories. The program was also pleased to welcome winners of prior Young Artists Awards competitions who participated in judging at the auditions this year.
The best of performing arts students ages 8-21 from throughout Southwest Florida participated in the largest independent performing arts competition held in Lee County, held on the campus of the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers. Ranging in skill from elementary age students auditioning in voice or dance for their first time to college age performers who have won international competitions, each judge provided the students in their category with written comments and critiques in addition to their scoring sheets.
In addition to the twenty-two finalists selected to perform individually at the gala, all performers, including an additional twenty-two runner-up students, will work with vocal and dance coaches on a group number to be featured on stage at the opening of the event at the Broadway Palm.
Participants are given numerous opportunities to perform at other community events throughout the year, including monthly performances at Fort Myers Art Walk on the first Friday of every month in the downtown River District, at ArtFest Fort Myers, and more. The winner of this year’s music category will be invited to perform with the Gulf Coast Symphony. More information on the program, as well as videos of prior year winning performances can be found at www.youngartistsawards.org.
Proceeds from the silent auction at the event will benefit the organization’s ‘Art by Kids with Cancer’ project, which assists families in need at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida who are experiencing the financial challenges of childhood cancer.
