WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk raises more than $315,000

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Step by step, walkers old and young alike gathered in Lee County Saturday morning, walking to defeat hunger.

“We’re happy to be here and help the less fortunate in our community,” said one participant.

It was the 7th annual WINK News feeds families hunger walk 2015. A goal of $315,000 was met just in time, with a last minute surprise donation of $10,000 by Lipman Produce.

“There are so many people out there that need a meal, and this helps make that happen,” said All Brislain, President of the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

He says hosting the walk after the holidays reminds people that hunger never takes a break. “What we are going to raise today will mean that more than a million and a half dollars worth of food will go to families in need.”

The Harry Chapin Food Bank feeds 30,000 people every month, thousands of who are children.

“That’s where our heart is,” said Brislain. “Making sure kids are fed. We serve about 12,000 kids a month through the emergency program.”

It’s a harsh reality that motivates our community to come together.

One participant said, “There are people out there in need, and if I can give back, I love to give back.  Give back to my community.”
