MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A former University of Miami football player is in stable condition after a car crash on a Miami Beach highway.
A Jackson Memorial Hospital spokeswoman says JoJo Nicolas' condition was upgraded from critical Wednesday.
The Miami Herald reports (http://hrld.us/1hxPoQd ) that Hurricanes football coach Al Golden joined JoJo Nicolas' family and friends Tuesday at the Ryder Trauma Center. Golden said Nicolas is "a big part of our U family and all of us are pulling for him."
Nicolas played for the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2011. In 2012, he briefly signed with the New York Giants as a rookie free agent.
Nicolas tweeted early Tuesday that he was celebrating his birthday at a South Beach club. Hours later, the car he was driving crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer as he left the beach.
The crash stopped traffic on the causeway for hours.
