Weight loss is just the first step in the battle against obesity for one Lehigh Acres woman. The next part is keeping the weight off, and Amy Sica is getting physical to keep up with her new healthy lifestyle.
Sica lost more than 230 pounds. She says, "I never wanted to be one of those people that just decided that you know, the weight loss was going to work for them and be able to come home and sit on the couch and not do anything."
After have successful weight loss surgery, she decided to do something more intense to keeps the pounds off. She says, "I got to a point in my head, I said I'm going to lose 100 to 130 pounds and then I'm going to start training MMA. It's something different-everybody goes to the gym, everybody lifts weights, everybody can go out and go running for a while. But with the training it takes a lot of heart and soul and I feel like with my entire weight loss journey that I have that. When I first started, I thought ok, this is a great way to continue the weight loss so the more I got involved into it, I thought you know what- I want to compete. I want to do this all the time. I want to be in the ring, I want to take it to the next level of not just training but doing this and seeing where it could take me."
That ambition took her under the spotlights for her first MMA (mixed martial arts) match. Surrounded by an entourage of 35 friends and family, Amy took part in her first pro fight.
"It was really strange, because you thought your adrenaline would be pumping more and you'd be more nervous. But the door opened, I got in and I was like, 'I'm ready for this. This is it, let's go,'' she says. "It's definitely a sport I want to pursue. I'm a wife, I'm mom. You know I work, things like that, but this is not just a hobby for me, it is something I definitely see myself pursuing."
She hopes others follow in her footsteps, using her story as motivation for their own weight loss journey.
"Even when I look in the mirror and I see how much I've succeeded, I mean losing 230 pounds is an amazing feat for anyone. Whether you've have surgery or have been able to do it naturally, it is a different lifestyle in itself. I mean, everyday I get up, I'm living another day. So life is my second chance, it's my second chance," she says.
