BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - A private prison company has withdrawn a $6 million donation to Florida Atlantic University in exchange for naming rights to the school's stadium.
The Palm Beach Post (http://bit.ly/YsTxhs ) reports the offer was withdrawn Monday evening by GEO Group of Boca Raton.
The announcement of the naming rights deal was met by outrage from students and pro-immigrant activists in South Florida in February.
The school's faculty senate approved a resolution last week opposing the deal and the student government was planning to address the issue this week,
The Palm Beach County-based university had announced it would rename the stadium to GEO Group Stadium in exchange for the donation to the school's athletic department. The gift was a 12-year commitment with annual payments of $500,000.
GEO's chairman is an FAU alumnus.
