FORT MYERS, Fla.- Fort Myers has a new nickname: Dunk City.
The Eagles have put Fort Myers on the map, and fans are going crazy for our Cinderella team.
Eagles fever has definitely set in on campus. It all started last night with an early morning welcome home, once the men touched down in Fort Myers. Fresh off a 10-point victory over San Diego State, the FGCU Eagles arrived back at the nest to a hero's wlecome.
"It's just surreal. I'm still on cloud 9. It hasn't really hit me yet," said forward/center Leonard Livingston.
Students lined up early today to get their names on a waiting list for tickets to the next game against the Florida Gators in Arlington, Texas.
The Eagles provided two upsets so far, becoming the first 15 seed in history to make it this far in the tournament. Now, their sights are set for the sky.
"My expectations were just to see what would happen. Now they're in the Sweet 16, I feel like anything's possible," said FGCU graduate Robbie Spencer.
Now, with Fort Myers on the map as Dunk City, it's clear the reputation is here to stay.
Snowbird Don Brisbin said, "Never heard of the Eagles before, like almost all the people here. Florida's going to be tough, but I think they've got a good team, so who knows?"
With chatter over the success of the men's basketball team being heard around the world, FGCU hopes the Eagles can recruit more college students to our area.
