FORT MYERS, Fla.– The Boston Red Sox announced that they are planning a weeklong series of events and activities that will give back to communities throughout Southwest Florida.
Highlights of the week include a free admission open house at the new JetBlue Park at Fenway South; uniformed personnel and front office staff volunteering at nonprofits across Southwest Florida; and two longtime fundraising efforts that will help children in need throughout Southwest Florida.
The week will begin Saturday, Feb. 25, with the Lee County Board of Commissioners and the Boston Red Sox hosting the public grand opening of JetBlue Park at Fenway South, a free event featuring a variety of family-friendly activities.
Tuesday, Feb. 28 and Wednesday, Feb. 29, Red Sox uniformed personnel and front office staff will spend the afternoons volunteering at the Amigos Center, Special Equestrians, Community Cooperative Ministries, Inc., Treeline Elementary, the VA Outpatient Clinic and the African Caribbean American Catholic Center.
The Red Sox Week of Community Service calendar also includes two long-time Red Sox charitable events - the 19th annual Boston Red Sox Children’s Hospital Celebrity Classic golf tournament benefiting The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida on Monday, Feb. 27 and the seventh annual Evening with the Red Sox benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County on Thursday, Mar. 1.

Saturday, Feb. 25 – Opening of JetBlue Park at Fenway South – Public Open House The Lee County Board of Commissioners and the Boston Red Sox will host a grand opening celebration on Saturday, February 25 beginning at 11:30 a.m. where they will officially open JetBlue Park at Fenway South, the team’s new 106-acre Spring Training and Player Development Complex in Lee County.
Executives and crewmembers from JetBlue Airways, the official airline of the Boston Red Sox, will also be on hand to help officially open JetBlue Park. The grand opening ceremony will be followed by an Open House, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., open to all fans and visitors. During the Open House, fans will have an opportunity to walk freely around JetBlue Park and enjoy concessions and entertainment on Fenway South Drive – a street festival reminiscent of Yawkey Way in Boston. Much like at Fenway Park in Boston, the street will have entertainment including, face painting, magicians, stilt walkers, a bounce house, obstacle course, and other games for children. As well, to help support Florida’s Blood Center, a blood drive will be taking place during the open house for those who are able to make a blood donation.
February 25 also marks the date of the first full squad workout of the 2012 Red Sox team. Fans will have an opportunity to walk around the practice fields of Fenway South in addition to JetBlue Park where, for the first time, both major and minor league teams will train together at a single complex. The Red Sox Team Store will also be open.

Monday, Feb. 27 – 19th Annual Boston Red Sox Children’s Hospital Celebrity Classic
Members of the Boston Red Sox uniformed personnel, alumni and front office staff will participate in the 19th annual Boston Red Sox Children’s Hospital Celebrity Classic golf tournament being held at The Forest Country Club in South Fort Myers. All proceeds raised will help fund an expansion of The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, providing extensive medical subspecialty treatments and state-of-the-art lifesaving care for the children of Southwest Florida.

Tuesday, Feb. 28 – Day of Community Service
On Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m., members of the Red Sox uniform personnel and front office staff will perform community service at three nonprofit agencies in Southwest Florida, including the Amigos Center, Community Cooperative Ministries Inc.’s Everyday Marketplace and Montessori Preschool and Special Equestrians. Volunteers will be involved in a variety of activities at each location including interacting with youth, helping stock shelves, assisting the homeless and hungry with emergency food selections and assisting with therapeutic horseback riding classes for children and adults with disabilities.

On Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m., members of the Red Sox uniformed personnel and front office staff will perform community service at three nonprofit agencies in Southwest Florida including Treeline Elementary, the VA Outpatient Clinic and the AFCAAM. Volunteers will be involved in a variety of activities at each location including participating in helping stuff emergency weekend backpacks with food for local students, interacting with local veterans and mentoring and tutoring sessions to help students build self-esteem and self-reliance. Thursday, Mar. 1 – Seventh Annual Evening with the Red Sox benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County
For the seventh consecutive year, the Boston Red Sox will host Evening with the Red Sox benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County to be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Fort Myers from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The evening will include an opportunity for autographs with Red Sox players, live and silent auctions featuring Red Sox memorabilia, regular season game packages, vacation packages and local golf and restaurant experiences. Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine will serve as the featured speaker.

The Red Sox will open the Spring Training season with two college exhibitions on Saturday, March 3, a 2:35 p.m. matinee against the Northeastern University Huskies followed by a nightcap with the Boston College Eagles at 7:05 p.m. The Red Sox will kick off the 2012 Grapefruit League schedule at home on Sunday, March 4 at 1:35 p.m. against their Mayor’s Cup rival Minnesota Twins.
