MIAMI (AP) — The Florida Marlins spent $1.7 million to sign first-round draft pick Christian Yelich, a first baseman and outfielder who otherwise was planning to play for the Miami Hurricanes.

Yelich, the 23rd overall selection, agreed late Monday. The Marlins ended up signing 32 players they took in this year's draft, along with six free agents.

Yelich, 18, played for Westlake High in Westlake Village, Calif. A left-handed batter, Yelich hit .450 with nine home runs and 28 stolen bases as a high school senior.

Yelich will likely report to the Marlins' complex in Jupiter, Fla. later this summer.
