PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Graeme McDowell has become the first player from Northern Ireland to win the U.S. Open.
McDowell fired a 3-over 74 win beat Gregory Havret by one shot at Pebble Beach. McDowell entered the final round three shots back before playing just well enough on a day when just one of the top-10 finishers shot better than even par. His even-par total is the highest score for a U.S. Open winner in a quarter-century.
Havret was trying to become the first Frenchman to capture the tournament.
Tiger Woods sputtered after making a late charge in the third round to get back into contention. Woods closed with a 75 to finish at plus-3.
Ernie Els ended up third at 2-over, one shot ahead of Woods and Phil Mickelson. Matt Kuchar fired a 3-under 68 to finish in a tie for sixth with Davis Love III.
